Benefits of Using Natural Gas Generators in Standby Applications

For critical facilities, like hospitals, data centers, food and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and oil & gas-related sites, a constant supply of power is indispensable. Standby rental power plants guarantee the continuous supply of reliable electricity in the event of power failure. Standby temporary power systems fundamentally have limited hours of operation, because they are only activated when the power is cut from the primary electricity source. Therefore, the more hours the standby power station operates, the more important the fuel choice becomes.

Among the rental power technologies available, diesel generators still remain the most popular for standby applications, largely due to economy, wide availability of fuel, fuel safety, ease of installation and typically better transient (load acceptance) capabilities. However, it is notable that generators running on natural gas are progressively gaining ground as a standby power solution, largely owing to ease of maintenance and environmental stewardship. The market expansion of such technology is spurred by the availability of inexpensive locally extracted natural gas, strict emission regulations in many countries around the world, and an increasing number of longer-term temporary power requirements.

One of the most salient advantages of using natural gas in standby application is the availability of a reliable fuel supply. Natural gas lines produce a round-the-clock supply that runs underground, which means that they are generally protected from natural disasters, like storms, floods and hurricanes. In addition, this set-up also eliminates the need for fuel storage tanks, which in turn will require refueling, regulation and maintenance.

Natural gas rental power plants also see reduced expenditure related to manpower, fuel storage and fuel treatment. A standby power station usually operates between 50 and 100 hours per year, at most 500. Calculating using the prevailing fuel price, Caterpillar declares that a standby power station running on natural gas operated for only 50 hours per year can save more than USD 15,000 per year in fuel costs. Therefore, utilizing natural gas-powered standby power plants during an extended outage can considerably reduce operating costs.

Another benefit to opting for natural gas standby power plants is reduced exhaust emissions. Studies conducted in different rental power plants sites around the world show that natural gas temporary power stations can surpass the worldwide NOx emission requirements, emitting only 250 mg/Nm3 even without after treatment. Running on a lean mixture of fuel and air, lean-burn natural gas gensets release up to five times less NOx and virtually zero particulate matter.

Natural gas gensets are also used as emergency, continuous or peaking power. Do you want to learn more about large-scale natural gas generator sets and their wide range of applications? Visit our website at www.altaaqaglobal.com.

Is Energy Shortage Really the Problem?

Many countries around the world have been facing energy challenges that have been hampering the growth of their economies, and bringing unspeakable social and economic suffering to their residents and industries.

These countries often attribute the crisis to an insufficiency in energy supply, but industry experts think otherwise. They say that if we were only able to capture and use the energy from just two minutes of sunlight, it would be sufficient to fuel everyone’s cars, light and heat buildings and provide for all other electricity needs for not less than an entire year. They retain that the world is not facing an energy supply shortage – what it is up against is a technical challenge in capturing energy and delivering it to consumers.

A large part of today’s energy challenges can be attributed to energy utilization – from conflicts over fuel supplies and uncertainties about environmentally harmful emissions, to lost productivity and output owing to load shedding and persistent power outages. In many of the most depressed areas of the world, the lack of electricity reins in economic progress. Around the world, more than 1.3 billion people have no access to reliable electricity, and more than 2.5 billion does not have modern cooking facilities. Out of these, more than 95% resides in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Indian Sub-Continent and developing Asia.

Industry thought leaders retain that the global energy crisis is exacerbated by the observed lack of innovation, particularly towards efficient electricity delivery. A study by the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory of the United States government revealed that more than 60% of the energy the world uses was lost between the time it was generated and the time it was consumed. This fact, the research added, could be ascribed to inefficiency in converting fossil fuels to electricity, losses during transmission and consumer behavior.

Industry experts believe that innovations in waste elimination, pollution reduction and broadening of access to energy the world over can very well alleviate the present situation. They call on industry stakeholders to develop energy boosting technologies and equipment that can guarantee an efficient delivery of electricity to remote areas that are currently unconnected.

In this light, large-scale rental power plants, among other available energy technologies, may represent an excellent short- to medium-term solution to the world’s ongoing electricity challenges. Modern temporary power plants are infused with the latest technologies that allow them to run on more environmentally friendly fuels, like gas or dual-fuel, that render them not only sustainable but also more efficient.

They are also equipped with state-of-the-art protection systems and engines that make them capable of directly connecting to grid of any site in any country around the world, and of precisely producing the exact amount of electricity needed by any client at any time. For instance, a 100 MW rental power plant has the ability to actually produce 100 MW when the customer calls for it.

As they are compact and containerized, they can be transported from and to any place on Earth, even to the remote, unconnected areas.

They are fully supported, maintained and serviced by the rental power service providers, from installation to decommissioning, so they also provide huge savings to the governments and tax-payers by avoiding large capital expenditure.

It is important to note that while there may exist technologies with enhanced efficiency and optimized electricity generation and transmission capabilities, a large part of the responsibility is still in the hands of the energy users. It is not enough to generate and transmit electricity – to be able to improve the world’s energy situation, the onus to properly and resourcefully utilize electricity is still on us.

Altaaqa Global achieves high commendation at UK awards

The company was highly commended for the Energy Excellence Award at the 2014 Energy Institute Awards, London, UK

Altaaqa Global, the global provider of temporary power solutions, was highly commended for the Energy Excellence Award for its 23-day installation of a 54 MW power plant in Aden, Yemen, at the 2014 Energy Institute Awards held on November 13 at the Sheraton Park Lane, London, UK. With its entry, titled “Rebuilding a War-Torn Nation”, Altaaqa Global was shortlisted for the accolade among a stellar pool of nominees, including the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers, the UK Ministry of Defence, and Open Energi and Aggregate Industries.

The Energy Excellence Award is intended to give recognition to an outstanding feat in the energy industry, bannering fresh thinking and strategic and innovative problem solving. To be qualified for the award, a company or a project’s attainment should have the greatest impact on all parts of the industry. As the organizers put it, the award spans all the other categories, and represents the pinnacle of achievements in the energy industry.

Commenting from the event, Peter den Boogert, General Manager of Altaaqa Global, said, “We are proud yet humbled to be recognized by the highest energy body in the UK. This recognition is a testament to the hard work that the men and women of Altaaqa Global have given to the project, braving security instability and the harshest weather conditions. We, furthermore, extend our sincerest gratitude to the local Yemeni engineers that joined us in completing this historic project.”

Majid Zahid, Strategic Accounts Director of Altaaqa Global, attributed the achievement to the people of Aden, Yemen. “We share this distinction with the people of Yemen, including the country’s leadership, who trusted us with providing the much needed electricity as they were rebuilding their nation. This project met myriad challenges, but we drew the strength and tenacity to go on from their faith and hope. Moreover, this project would not have been as meaningful without the positive response that the people of Yemen have shown towards our energy conservation and efficient usage campaigns.”

Steven Meyrick, Board Representative of Altaaqa Global, said that this recognition would further encourage the company to improve on its processes and take on projects that push the envelope of engineering ingenuity. “This high commendation from the Energy Institute substantiates the progressive steps that Altaaqa Global has been taking towards achieving the highly ambitious goals that we have set for ourselves. We will continue to challenge ourselves in every project that we do and to build on the innovation that we have introduced in the past.”

Altaaqa Global’s 54 MW project in Aden, Yemen was installed and completed as the country was recovering from the effects of the Arab Spring. Built in a mere 23 days, the temporary power plant was able to supply electricity to more than half a million people. The success of the project prompted the government of Yemen to add 50 MW to the existing installation, bringing the total capacity of the power station to 104 MW.
