Temporary power solutions touted as cost-effective option for mines

The global mining industry is enduring a period of great uncertainty. In the face of extreme market volatility, stagnant commodity prices, weak demand and suppressed levels of economic growth in established markets, many mining companies are striving to remain buoyant, says temporary power solutions provider Altaaqa Global chief commercial officer Majid Zahid.


Speaking on the sidelines of the 2017 Investing in African Mining Indaba, in Cape Town, he noted that in miners’ quest to emerge victorious from the recession, many of them had implemented cost-cutting initiatives aimed at ensuring maximum customer value with fewer resources.

“Others have chosen to be cautiously proactive and embarked on exploration programmes in a bid to boost long-term profitability. Some have turned to technology to optimise processes and facilitate existing methods,” Zahid added.

Zahid commented that “going lean” had become a significant trend in the industry, as mining companies sought to concurrently reduce workforce numbers, capital and energy intensity; exploit growth opportunities and ensure maximum value for their products and services.

He believes that power generation and supply choice is a part of mines’ operations that could significant alter the profile of their capital expenditure.

“Electricity remains the life-blood of mine sites worldwide. However, with the current economic situation, mine operators cannot afford to devote a large portion of their scarce capital to a major expenditure, like building a permanent power plant. Considering this, mine operators can instead choose to hire multimegawatt temporary power solutions,” Zahid said.

He noted that a consistent, dependable and sufficient supply of electricity was of vital importance throughout the life cycle of a mine operation. “Temporary power plants can adequately provide for the electricity needs of a mine site. They can power camp sites during prefeasibility, feasibility and exploratory stages and support the establishment of the mine operation after a successful exploration,” Zahid highlighted.

He added that temporary power plants could also provide power to a mine’s machinery and the processing plants, as well as its temperature-control equipment.

How Much Do You Know About Renting Electricity?

You know that you can rent a car, a flat, or even songs and movies. But, have you heard about renting power?

Renting affords numerous advantages, particularly to transient users, or those that use a particular item for a limited period of time. Think about renting flats, cars, movies or costumes. When you don’t see yourself living in a city for a long period of time, will you still invest in buying a home? When you expect to sparingly use a car, will you still spend on acquiring one and shell out for servicing and maintenance throughout its lifetime? For someone who simply likes to watch a new movie and does not fancy collecting films, will it make more sense to rent it than to actually buy a copy of it? Would you like to wear that Dracula costume every year to a Halloween party? I guess not.

There are many things that you can rent, but have you any idea about renting electricity? Yes, electricity can be rented, and it is a viable solution to energize numerous communities around the world that still lack access to reliable electricity. So, how does that work?


Basically, when a power utility company, a manufacturing firm, a mine operator or a government chooses to rent electricity, what they actually get is a complete, temporary power plant, designed, tailored, delivered, installed, operated, managed and serviced by a temporary power provider. All the equipment are owned by the provider, and the customer does not have to nvest in anything related to capital. Similar to renting any other item, the customer only has to pay for the product or service while he is using it – or in this case, for the electricity generated during the contract. This means that the customer can simply pay for the services of the rental power provider from his OPEX or operational expenditure.


Rental power plants are unlike permanent power plants. They are made up of modular power equipment, generators, transformers and other ancillaries, and can be simply connected “plug-and-play”-style. Because of this, they can be easily delivered from and to anywhere in the world, and can be made operational within days. Customers need not wait for years or decades obtaining approvals, financing and waiting for the completion of construction. Remember when you rented a car? The car was ready and was immediately handed over to you, right? And when you rented a flat? Did you have to wait for years for the building to be built before you could move in? No. Upon making the first tranche of payment, the keys to the unit were readily given to you.


When the need for supplemental electricity passes, a rental power plant can be simply uninstalled and demobilized, of course, by the temporary power provider. This means that there will be no permanent infrastructure left behind that will need constant maintenance and servicing. Simply put, the utility provider, the mining company, the manufacturing firm or the government stops spending when the need for supplemental electricity is no longer there.

Insights on the Power Rental Market in the Middle East

The performance of the power rental market in the Middle East remains strong, riding high on the region's continued economic growth and sustained industrial and infrastructure activities. Peter den Boogert, CEO of Altaaqa Global, shares the company's perspectives on the road map ahead of the temporary power market in the Middle East.


Which factors are leading to the rise in power rental market in the Middle East region? 

The power rental market has been constantly growing in the Middle East, owing to the region’s continuous economic growth, sustained industrial and infrastructure activities, rapid growth in population, improvement in the standards of living, occasional utility shortages in key areas, and observed unreliable electricity connection in various cities and provinces. 

The above mentioned factors lead to the requirement for alternative power sources, such as multi-megawatt temporary power plants, to support the region’s existing power infrastructure. For instance, the intense industrial and construction activities, coupled with a massive electricity requirement on the part of residents especially during summer months put a heavy load on the region’s utilities, so that occasionally they are unable to supply the required power. This is where turning to temporary power becomes beneficial, particularly in maintaining the productivity of construction or industrial operations, and in avoiding power interruptions, load shedding or peak shaving.  

Furthermore, temporary power plants are also employed to bring electricity to areas where power connection remains unreliable or absent, like in remote locations or mountainous regions. 

Which is the biggest genset market in the region? Recent reports suggest Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar are leading the way. What are the countries, you think, follow the list?

We observe that Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar remain the biggest markets for multi-megawatt temporary power solutions in the region. 

Although the decrease in oil prices has had, to some extent, an effect on the economy of Saudi Arabia, economic experts agree that it has not restricted the country’s investments in various projects. The experts recognize the country’s extensive cash reserves for the continuous development in Saudi Arabia’s public infrastructure, utilities, healthcare and education, to name a few. Thus, the sustained construction and industrial activities in the country, coupled with a constantly increasing electricity demand from its residents and businesses, are spurring the buoyancy of the power rental market in Saudi Arabia. In fact, market research firm 6W Research estimates the CAGR of the power rental market in Saudi Arabia to be at 12.6% from 2015-2021.

Similarly, the demand for electricity has, over the years, tremendously increased in the UAE. The constantly increasing public and private infrastructure, together with an expanding population, has caused the country’s electricity requirement to surge in the last decade. The same research firm predicts the CAGR of the temporary power market in the UAE to be at 16.8% from 2015-2021, taking into keen consideration the upcoming World Expo 2020, during which about 25 million tourists are expected to visit the country. Preparations for the global event, including the construction of trade centers, hotels, hospitals, rail networks and airports are seen to be driving the growth of the rental power sector in the country.

The rental power market in Qatar is heavily influenced by the country’s preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022. The increasing infrastructure development (building of eight new stadiums, renovation of three existing stadiums, establishment of Lusail City), expanding transportation network (building of Doha Metro Rail and expressways), surging public and private investments, rising hospitality sector and continuous economic reforms are driving the growth of the temporary power business in the country. Research firm 6W Research pegs the growth of the rental power sector in the country at 23.3% from 2014-2020. 

Other significant markets for multi-megawatt rental power solutions in the region include Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain, which are also economically and industrially viable countries.

It is worth noting that temporary power solutions can also prove beneficial for countries that may require infrastructure rebuilding and rehabilitation, or re-establishment of a reliable power connection, like Yemen, Iraq and Syria. As the governance of these countries become more stable in the coming years, we believe that they will represent excellent market opportunities for temporary power providers.

Between gas and diesel gensets, which has a better growth prospect and why? With solar generation being tapped in a big way today especially in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt, do you think it may affect the genset industry?

It is expected that the diesel generator market will continue to grow in the next several years, owing to easy availability, safety and economy of fuel, and ease of installation of diesel equipment.

However, we are noticing a gradual increase in the requirement for natural gas and dual-fuel power generation technologies, largely influenced by the increasing availability of fuel resources and government initiatives towards reducing carbon emissions. 

In the past, fuel availability and the costs of installing safe and reliable fuel delivery infrastructure have been limitations on the growth of the natural gas generator market. Today, however, gas is becoming increasingly available and gas generation technologies are progressively finding application in bigger and longer-duration projects, making the upfront investment for the gas infrastructure economically sensible. The availability of dual-fuel generators (which significantly simplifies the transition from diesel-run to gas-run generators), is also helping overcome these obstacles.

As for the observed gradual shift in solar and other renewable power generation technologies, we see this as a welcome development in increasing the availability of electricity in areas that require it, and in diversifying the energy mix to encourage long-term energy security. 

Multi-megawatt temporary power technologies are primed to work in tandem with renewable energy sources to help surmount issues of power supply unpredictability and intermittency, especially in power-intensive industries like oil & gas, construction, and utility power generation, transmission and distribution.  

Temporary power plants can also provide supplemental power to renewable energy facilities during planning, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, operations and maintenance. Temporary power plants can help ensure that renewable energy plants are constructed and delivered on time and as planned, and that they remain efficient, reliable and in optimum condition at all times.

What are the preferred ranges that are most popular in the region and the industries that are catered to? Which are Altaaqa Global’s most popular genset ranges and contracts it has been awarded in the region?

The amount of required power vary from industry to industry. For instance, construction projects may require a few hundred kVA during the building phase to a few MW during the commissioning stage. Refinery maintenance and rehabilitation often requires several MW of power. The utility industry has the biggest demand, usually requiring power plants of tens or hundreds of MW to provide supplementary power to the grid.

Rental Power Plants: Bringing Reliable Power to Islands

Keeping islands supplied with reliable electricity comes with several challenges for island power utility providers.


Islands around the world have been experiencing a constant increase in local population and electricity utilization in the past decades, taking its toll on the local permanent power infrastructure. This is not helped by the seasonal rise in population during high tourism months, which creates a momentary but significant spike in electricity demand.

In light of this, the local permanent power stations that supply electricity to the islands have been failing to keep up with the continuous rise in power requirements, particularly in peak summer months, when residents use the most electricity and when tourists come flocking to the islands. A possible solution is to import electricity from the mainland or from other islands in the area, but the wide distance poses significant difficulties in moving reliable electricity.

On top of this is the issue of power plant operation and maintenance. As the local power plants age and become less efficient, they have increasingly been requiring enormous amounts of servicing and fuel, which adds to the cost of running them, hitting customers in the pocket.

In recognition of the urgent need to expand the power generation capacity and to improve the power infrastructure of islands, there has been a keen interest on building alternative power systems, particularly of renewables, but initiatives in this regards have been met with headwinds.

Not a one-size-fits-all solution

There are several observed obstacles to building renewable energy systems in islands.

First, there is the location. For instance, an island with a large population will require the most amount of electricity, but will have a limited space for wind or solar energy systems; while an island with fewer people may have more sites for renewable energy infrastructure, but may find it difficult to attract and secure investments owing to projected limited demand. A proposed solution is to move electricity between islands, but this is not possible in all cases, and building power transmission and distribution lines across huge distances will require a sizeable amount of capital expenditure.

Furthermore, renewables, like sunshine and wind, may not always be available in all sites, making the electricity production of renewable energy facilities highly intermittent. For example, the output of a wind farm will depend on the constant changes in wind speed and direction, and that of a photovoltaic system may fluctuate as clouds pass. The power generated by hydroelectric systems will vary with the amount of rainfall and the flow of streams.

Storing “as-available” energy maybe a possible solution, but, again, building energy storage facilities will be cost-prohibitive and will add to the price of electric power.

Support from firm electricity sources

In support of intermittent electricity sources, island power utility providers need firm energy sources, which are available on-demand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to meet their customers’ energy needs. Island power utilities will find benefits in partnering with multi-megawatt temporary power providers to supply reliable electricity anytime and anywhere it is needed.

Temporary power plants can be deployed at a moment’s notice and can be easily installed to start supplying electricity in a matter of days. The generators that make up the plants are containerized so they can be easily delivered as complete power packages anywhere in the world, even in remote areas. They are also modular, which means they can fit a wide variety of site lay-outs, and do not need to be laid out on a huge space. They also have low-noise and low-emission operations, so situating them within the vicinity of residential areas and tourist spots will not pose a huge issue.

The latest-technology temporary power plants can be easily connected to the existing local power infrastructure in islands, and can generate power either in synchronization with the local power generation plants or as a standalone system. They are flexible in power and voltage, and their electricity output can be scaled up or down to meet islands’ varying electricity demand.

Hiring temporary power plants will not require a sizable capital expenditure, and owing to their operational reliability and fuel efficiency will considerably reduce the operating and maintenance expenses of island utility providers.

New demand, new power sources

Island power utility providers are hard at work at meeting the perceived challenges of supplying reliable power to islands. Island utilities are gradually developing renewable energy projects where possible, adding power lines and substations needed for such projects, and working on improving energy storage technologies that will allow them to add more renewable energy to the grid. As island power utilities optimize renewable energy technologies to enhance their long-term reliability and overall power quality, other alternative power sources, such as multi-megawatt rental power plants, are ready to support the electricity needs of islands around the world, delivering reliable electricity anytime and anywhere it is needed.

Encouraging Outlook for the Middle East Rental Power Market

The rental power market in the Middle East has remained buoyant, and is predicted to go on expanding in years to come. Buoyed by the development of new rental power technologies, interim power stations will continue to find application in a variety of sectors, including utility markets, extractive industries like mining and oil & gas, large process industries and major infrastructure construction projects.


Among the rental power technologies available, diesel generators will continue to dominate the market, largely due to the wide availability of fuel, fuel safety & economy and ease of installment. However, it is helpful to note that generators running on other fuels, such as natural gas and dual-fuel (a combination of diesel and gas), are progressively gaining ground. The market expansion of such technologies is spurred by the increasing availability of inexpensive locally extracted natural gas and the strict emission regulations in many countries around the world.


There have been observed limitations on the growth of the natural gas generator market, including fuel availability, and the prohibitive cost of installing safe and reliable fuel delivery infrastructure. Today, these are gradually being mitigated by the availability of cost-effective natural gas resources, and the application of natural gas technologies in bigger and longer-duration projects. In addition, dual-fuel generators simplifies the transition from diesel-run to gas-run generators.

As technology here develops, it is inevitable that they will play an increasingly important role in the future energy mix, and in the development of hybrid solutions with diesel or natural gas generators.

Keeping the power rolling



It was in 2010 when the idea of an “empowered” ball was first documented. Four Harvard graduates conceptualized a soccer ball infused with a pendulum-like mechanism that would rotate to power a generator, which would then charge a battery inside the ball. This essentially meant that after 30 minutes of playing with the ball, it would already be capable of powering an LED light bulb for several hours, and that a two-hour game would allow the ball to charge a cell phone.

It is easy to infer that the ball was primarily created with the aim of solving one of the world’s most daunting challenges: Billions around the world do not have regular, reliable access to electricity. One of the proponents, who come from an African descent, would often recount in interviews the energy challenges she would face when she would visit her grandmother’s home in Nigeria. The thought that many children in the world’s most underdeveloped communities still suffer from playing under a single lamppost or from studying beside a dangerous kerosene lamp drove the exponents to take the technology further. With a two-fold objective of giving school children a means of recreation and a small-scale reliable supply of electricity, the “empowered” ball was distributed in schools and to depressed rural communities around the world.

From the foregoing, one thing is clear – the invention of the electric ball is an effort towards rural electrification. While it may be obvious that thousands, maybe millions of electric soccer balls are needed (not to mention around hundreds of thousands of hours playing) to supply energy to the entire population of the world without access to electricity, the traction that the invention is gaining from investors and supporters around the world represents a start towards the desired direction.



The transformation of rural electrification

Electrification of rural communities has traditionally been based on electricity supply from a central grid, mainly owing to the “economies of scale” achieved with large-scale power plants. Recent technological advances in alternative power sources, however, have made it sensible to consider decentralized sources of energy, like photovoltaic systems, wind turbines, biomass and fuel cells. Innovation in alternative sources of electricity is further driven by local and international agreements reinforcing a reduction in emissions, and a ramp-up in the efficiency of production and use of energy.

Research studies show that at present, more than ever, the electrification of rural and remote communities in emerging countries will be based on decentralized power facilities. But, as the demand for electricity grows as the population increases and as lifestyles evolve, rural electrification activities should be designed and implemented within a precise policy framework. Industry players find merit in using excess power generated by rural industrial enterprises to support public electricity sully, and in considering small-scale independent power producers fully fledged suppliers of electricity. Energy industry authorities advocate a stringent cooperation between utility providers and rural customers, as well as the adoption of a well-defined marketing and technical function.

The fact that rural electricity supply is more expensive relative to urban energy supply is often seen as a disadvantage by utility providers. But, in light of the truth that billions of people are struggling with the lack of access to dependable power, energy thought leaders say that the predicament should be seen a challenge more than a bane. With the available technological options and the growing support of transformative investors, industry key players do not see a reason why rural electrification efforts should not be carried forward.

By offering diesel, gas and dual-fuel temporary power plants, Altaaqa Global’s product offerings will have a significant boost in the economy of emerging markets. To catch up with the demand for power generation, these countries require interim solutions as a stop-gap measure while waiting for the power infrastructure to be built.

Altaaqa Global installed 24 MW temporary power plant in just 96 hours


Altaaqa Global has successfully installed 24MWs of temporary power in the Sultanate of Oman. Taking only 4 days to complete, the power project was one of the fastest installations in the history of the equipment rental industry. 
Dubai, UAE – Altaaqa Global CAT Rental Power, a leading global power solutions provider, recently designed and installed a 24MW temporary power plant in the Sultanate of Oman.

To meet electricity demands throughout the summer, the 24MW temporary rental power plant will supply power to the electricity grid at a time when there is a significant increase in the use of temperature control equipment, such as air conditioning and district cooling. Supporting the existing generating capacity of Oman, the interim power plant will ensure peak performance during the hottest months of the year.

Taking just 96 hours to install, Peter den Boogert, Altaaqa Global’s General Manager for Business Development, commented on the impressive speed of deployment. “This reaffirms Altaaqa Global’s ability to install, commission and safely generate power within a matter of days. The full turnkey solution offers a complete package of power generators, transformers, fuel tanks, distribution panels, electrical accessories, and 24/7 CAT certified power engineers who will manage the temporary power plant.”
