Tips to remain confident at work without appearing arrogant

To be a full-fledged engineer is a feat achieved only by a select few. Being a certified engineer entails continuous dedication, persistence and tenacity, on top of limitless creativity, imagination and ambition. As such, engineers take much pride in their profession.


Many engineers exude a “can-do” attitude, swag if you may, which they bring with them everywhere they go – including their place of work. Years of intensive education and myriad surmounted adversities have armed engineers with the confidence that they hold the solution to any perceivable problem. At times, however, this beaming confidence can come off as arrogance, especially on the part of their non-engineer peers or line managers.

Being confident is an essential trait of employees, because it is one of the factors that drive their performance at work. On the other hand, being arrogant is frowned upon, and is usually the quality that rubs other employees or a company’s management the wrong way. There is a sea of gap between confidence and arrogance, and in an office setting, where perception can spell the difference between career advancement and stagnation, engineers better walk on the right side of that gap.

Here are some tips to be confident at work without appearing as arrogant:

1. Never fake it

Some people swear by the adage ‘fake it till you make it’. Well, we say that it is a trap.
Engineers who are trying to fake confidence at work are the ones who often come across as arrogant, because what they show is not what real confidence looks like. For example, they will raise their voice in a meeting, because that’s what they think confident people do. Or they will want to push their opinions and choices despite contrary empirical data, because they think confident people ought to make a grand stand.


As engineers, you no longer need to fake confidence to impress people at work. You already have it. It will come out in the way you think, express your thoughts, or present your designs or engineering solutions. You do not have to fit the mold of whatever you imagine confident people to be, because as an engineer you have an air of confidence that is uniquely, naturally yours.

2. Recognize that you are not the best in everything

Engineers, with their natural talents and educational formation, have the ability to invent or derive solutions to many challenges. They have the facility to come up with innovative methods of doing things faster and better.


To say that engineers are important members of any company’s workforce is the understatement of the century. They oftentimes hold the most crucial positions in any company! For example, in a manufacturing firm, product development engineers play the biggest role in turning concepts into products that people actually buy and use. Electrical engineers, on the other hand, make sure that facilities have enough electricity to continue manufacturing and achieving production and delivery targets.

But sometimes, no matter how good engineers are, they have to take a step back and let their colleagues shine in certain situations. Some engineers have to learn to recognize their limitations and acknowledge the capability of others.

Engineers have to understand that conceding the stage to other employees does not, in any way, diminish his experience, value or talents. Confident engineers see their colleagues as collaborators and, as such, are always ready to see the best in them. Confident engineers do not regard their co-employees as competitors in a race but as teammates in a relay towards achieving their company’s goals.

3. Embrace vulnerability

Confident engineers do not resist vulnerability. Engineers who are truly confident in themselves admit to their mistakes, acknowledge their accountability and welcome responsibility.


Being confident is not tantamount to being perfect. In fact, confidence is the foundation that makes it okay for engineers to drop the ball a few times and still know that they will be fine. Confident engineers do not put the blame on others or on the system to save themselves from a predicament. Confident engineers trust themselves that no matter how challenging a situation is, they can resolve it and emerge as better, stronger people.

How Mentorship Can Be Valuable to One’s Engineering Career

Mentorship is a two-way street, where the mentor engineers reap as much benefit as their protégés

Engineers spend years learning the fundamentals and complexities of their craft. They strive to amass knowledge to become experts in their fields and productive in their jobs. Unfortunately, not all engineers are able to apply the majority of what they have learned in their present functions. Most engineers find themselves in jobs that only require a fraction of what they actually know. Owing to this, a significant part of their knowledge becomes unutilized or forgotten, and learning opportunities start to slow down and eventually cease.


Many companies that employ engineers, like manufacturing firms Concepcion Industries or the National Steel Corporation in the Philippines, recognize that one of the foremost motivators of engineers is the prospect of continuous learning. Be it through continuing professional development (CPD) courses or industry-specific seminars and conferences, engineers welcome opportunities to acquire additional knowledge or share their expertise. In line with this, many companies are nowadays discovering the benefits of mentorship, not only to the protégés but also to the mentor engineers.

Mentoring also develops leadership, communication and supervisory skills on the part of the experienced engineers. As technically inclined professionals, most engineers find transitioning to management roles challenging because of the deficiency in key communication and people skills. How to Keep Engineers in Manufacturing Companies Engaged at Work

When engineers find their work environment motivating, they will continue to perform at their peak, and even surpass expectations

The role of engineers in manufacturing companies can never be understated. A manufacturing operation may involve engineers specializing in various fields, including product development, design & operation and electrical to name a few.


Product development engineers make ideas come to life. In companies like Apple, Samsung, or Microsoft, they are involved in turning concepts into actual products that consumers patronize and use.

Design and operation engineers design, develop and manage integrated systems for the production of high-quality products. These systems may include computer networks, robots, machine tools, and materials-handling equipment.

Electrical engineers make sure that the power supply in a manufacturing site is enough for the company to meet its production targets. This is of particular importance for industrial manufacturing businesses like ArcelorMittal, ThyssenKrupp, Boeing or Airbus. They maintain the power infrastructure and facilities within the manufacturing plant, or liaise with temporary electric power suppliers in times when the factory needs additional power, say during peak production seasons, or when load shedding or peak shaving are implemented in the area.

Whatever the area of specialization is, engineers play highly essential roles in manufacturing facilities, and as such, it is important to keep them motivated at work and retain their services. While there is not a world of difference between what keeps engineers engaged at work and what it takes to do that for any other member of the organization, paying keen attention to the unique motivational needs of engineers can spell a huge difference.

Here are some things to take into consideration in keeping engineers motivated in manufacturing companies:

1. Allow them to be free, creative

Engineers value a strong sense of autonomy and the freedom to choose how to approach various issues at work. They appreciate if they are given the opportunity to creatively resolve engineering-related challenges at work. Based on our experience with our electrical engineers, they thrive on a results-driven environment, and appreciate having a degree of independence to perform at their best with minimal supervision and instruction. They are also stimulated by a work environment that promotes and rewards innovative thought.

2. They are not enticed by promotion

Okay, hold your horses. When I said that engineers are not enticed by promotion, I meant the type that follows a conventional progression across the company organization.

Many engineers in manufacturing companies, like in India’s Tata Motors or Tejas Networks, may not be interested in traditional leadership positions, because they may not want to manage other employees or sit in the office for hours on end – they just want to keep building and developing products, and maintain the challenge and dynamism of a thriving engineering career. It is possible that promoting them to a traditional manager will suppress their creative engineering process, and this may dampen their motivation at work. For example, if a manufacturing company promotes an electrical engineer (who is actively engaged in installing, running and maintaining onsite power generation facilities) to a conventional manager (who will spend eight hours of his day preparing documents and responding to e-mails), then it is the running the risk of demotivating the previously-engaged engineer.

Having said this, if an engineer really deserves a promotion, then let it be to a position that is equally energetic and stimulating, that will still require his engineering creativity and ingenuity.

3. For engineers, learning is an ending journey (Kaizen)

Manufacturing companies hire engineers because of the latter’s mastery of what they do. While they may already be specialists in their own fields, engineers are always hungry to learn more and do more.

Engineers flourish in environments where learning is a part of their daily life. As such, manufacturing companies should continuously offer them opportunities to improve on their skills and to apply new learnings through healthy challenges. Based on experience, our electrical engineers welcome specialized training courses on modern technologies and innovative methods, and situations that will require them to use the new knowledge that they have acquired. They also appreciate opportunities to mentor technicians or other engineers, because doing so helps them reinforce their engineering knowledge and, to a large extent, gives a deeper sense of purpose to their vocation as engineers.

4. Give them missions, not just projects

Engineers are driven by their desire to change the world. Most great engineers are motivated by working on big projects and by seeing the encompassing results of their hard work. Therefore, it is important that engineers in a manufacturing company realize the magnitude of the task given to them.

For example, it is essential that an electrical engineer in an industrial manufacturing facility, like Emirates Global Aluminium or Tata Steel, understands that without him performing his task, the plant will not have the power to produce goods, and as such the company will fail at providing its customers that products that they need. This will help him see the real-world impact of his responsibility within the production plant. The consciousness that his task has a meaningful effect to a great number of people and businesses will lead him to embrace his accountability and to value more his position within the company.

5. Let them have fun

Engineering tasks within a manufacturing company can be daunting and can put a huge amount of pressure on engineers. It will not hurt to inject a bit of fun.

It is, thus, important for manufacturing companies to encourage enjoyment and interaction at work. For example, they can organize a quarterly family day, when employees and their families can gather and enjoy a day at the park. They can also arrange a company lunch or dinner after a successful campaign or production season as a sign of appreciation of the employees’ work. They can also host an awards ceremony to recognize exemplary performance. A sports day is also a good idea to allow employees to unwind and engage each other in healthy competition.

Engineers represent an invaluable part of the overall success of a manufacturing business. Engineers possess an intellectual capacity and ability to generate innovation, and this is essential for manufacturing companies especially amidst escalating competition within an increasingly challenging market. The more that the management understands what drives the motivation of engineers, the better experience the engineering team will have in the manufacturing company. And the more encouraging their work environment, the bigger the chance that engineers will remain engaged at work, perform at their peak and surpass expectations.

Pros and Cons of Different Fuel Options for Power Plants

In our previous article, we discussed lifecycle costs associated with the operation and maintenance of power plants, be they temporary or permanent. We said that though fuel represented the highest lifecycle cost, it was also the easiest to predict and calculate. In this article, we will look into some of the fuel options available for power plants, and identify some of their advantages and disadvantages.

Different fuel options are important in designing systems that respond to individual energy needs, budget concerns and fuel availability. Each fuel type has its benefits and drawbacks, so it is essential to take some time and research on the best fuel option during the system design process. Some fuel options available include natural gas, diesel, HFO and renewable fuels, such as vegetable oils, animal fats, and bio-diesel.


Natural gas is gaining ground as a cost-effective fuel solution, because it burns cleaner, and lengthens maintenance intervals and component lifetimes. There are multi-megawatt temporary power plants composed of natural gas generators that are designed for low-emission operation and fast set-up. Running on natural gas, these generators comply with worldwide emission limits even without after-treatment. Some observed disadvantages of natural gas are its limited availability and high costs of installing safe and reliable fuel delivery infrastructure. These, however, are gradually being solved owing to the increasing availability of gas and the opportunities in bigger and longer-duration projects opening up for gas power plants.


Diesel’s trump card has always been its availability, safety and economy, and ease of installation of power generation systems running on diesel. Diesel power generation systems are known to be reliable and flexible and are equipped with state-of-the-art technologies that allow them to run on a variety of fuels. Some noted disadvantages of using diesel as a fuel are the observed fluctuation of its price and environmental stewardship issues. The good news is that with cutting-edge power technologies made available by global temporary power providers, these observed issues can be mitigated.


Heavy fuel oil or HFO is available worldwide and engines running on this fuel are relatively common, but HFO has been observed to contain contaminants that increase component wear. Recognizing this, temporary power plant providers are making sure that they have intermediate systems that refine the fuel, reducing the contaminants and further enhancing the quality of the fuel. When choosing a power partner to run an HFO power plant, it is vital to make sure that the provider has these technologies available in order to lower the chances of reduced component life and higher maintenance costs.

Dual-fuel engines are another option to be considered. Though these engines are observed to have higher initial costs compared to single-fuel engines, they have the capability to provide the high-level of fuel flexibility that operators specifically require. Global temporary power providers can offer bi-fuel technologies that are specifically engineered to reduce fuel costs. For instance, there is a technologically advanced power system that uses a combination of 70% gas and 30% diesel, which will have a positive impact not only on fuel costs but also on emissions.


Alternative, reliable fuel options like vegetable oils, animal fats, and bio-diesel can also be utilized, but these require fuel treatment equipment. It may be helpful to note that the additional equipment may increase the initial capital costs and maintenance costs.

Different fuels have characteristics that influence their applicability. Depending on the location, budget, energy requirements or available technology, one fuel may be preferred over another. Experts say that it is still best to go with the clean fuel option, as this will result in longer component life and less performance degradation. But, thanks to the cutting-edge auxiliary technologies introduced in today’s power generation technologies, even the less clean fuels become viable options in specific situations.

The Importance of Scheduled Maintenance Planning in Ensuring the Efficiency of Power Plants

In our previous article, we spoke about lifecycle costs to consider when choosing a power generation system, like temporary power plants. We said that the costs include fuel, maintenance, and labor, among others. In line with our previous discussions, in this article, we’ll take a closer look at the importance of scheduled maintenance planning in ensuring the efficiency of a power plant.

Scheduled maintenance planning is a vital part of a preventive strategy that allows engineers and power plant operators to effectively plan for repairs, maintenance costs, and system downtime. A proper maintenance program should identify maximum run hours for each component in the power plant system, and also consider maintenance intervals, required spare parts, manpower, routine analysis and inspection details.


Now, let us throw the spotlight on maintenance intervals.

Maintenance intervals are the time periods between system inspection or overhauls and should be scheduled in parallel with the component run hour lifetime and operating requirements. As some engine and auxiliary parts, like fuel injection nozzles, piston rings, and bearings, are designed to be wear components, they should be regularly checked and replaced. The schedule can vary from power plant to power plant, especially if a condition-based maintenance program is utilized. Bear in mind that under condition-based maintenance program, wear components are only replaced if wear limits are exceeded or if the components exceed other replacement criteria previously set. Thus, when following a condition-based maintenance program, the lifetime of components is adjusted in consideration of operating parameters and data harvested from regular inspections.

As part of a predictive maintenance program, engineers and power plant operators should assess the component wear as observed during regular scheduled inspections. They should also record operating data on a regular basis and trend data points to provide a clear picture of any necessary adjustments in order to maximize power plant efficiency and help foresee any possible failures. If this is successfully done, this can help power plant operators mitigate the risk of unscheduled outages.

One can never overstate the importance of electricity in our world today. In almost everything that we do, we require electricity, so a constant and reliable supply of power is non-negotiable. It is, therefore, paramount for a power services provider to have an effective and well-planned preventive maintenance strategy to preclude the occurrence of unplanned power outages and ensure the efficient and cost-effective operation of a power plant.

Some Insights on Lifecycle Costs Related to Power Generation Systems

One cannot overstate the importance of electricity in people’s lives today. We all rely on electricity for a wide range of reasons, and we expect nothing but an uninterrupted supply of electricity that meets our power requirements. Thus, power utility providers strive to produce electricity not only consistently, but also efficiently in order to provide the most cost-effective solutions to their customers.

Even as power plants, temporary or permanent, differ according to several factors, they all need to be designed, operated and maintained properly, because even a minute irregularity in their operation will result in a dramatic change in their overall output. Poor power output, then, leads to lower efficiency, which in turn, brings higher lifecycle costs.


A close look at lifecycle costs

Any costs related to the operation and maintenance of the power plant during its lifetime are included in the lifecycle costs. Part of this are expenses related to fuel, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, labor, and lubricant oil, among others. It is advisable to have a thorough upfront planning for the aforementioned costs in order to effectively mitigate the risk of the occurrence of any unplanned costs.

Several factors contribute to the lifecycle costs of a power generation system. Costs, like operation- and maintenance-related expenses, can be anticipated and, thus, must be taken into consideration at the nascent stages of the project. On the other hand, unanticipated costs are harder to predict, so proper planning is required to minimize their impact. Having a proper preventive maintenance program, conducting regular emergency training and setting solid contingency plans are vital to preparing for both anticipated and unanticipated costs of power generation systems.

Fuel Costs

Experts agree that even as fuel constitutes the highest lifecycle cost, it is the easiest to foresee and calculate. Fuel costs are related to the specific fuel oil consumption (SFOC) at different loads, the operating profile of the plant and the fuel price. Other factors that affect fuel costs include efficiency degradation and the wearing of engine components.


Maintenance Costs

Another important lifecycle cost is maintenance. It is helpful to note that some engine and auxiliary equipment parts, like fuel injection nozzles, piston rings, and bearings, are designed to be wear components. Thus, they need to be replaced based on the standard component life or, in some cases, if wear limits have already been exceeded. Therefore, close monitoring of such components is vital, because when a component’s useful life has been reached, the risk of system failure notably increases.

Equipment operators and maintenance specialists have to be aware of notorious contributors to premature component wear, which include dirty lubricant oil or fuel of inferior quality. In this light, it is important to have a proper predictive maintenance program to early detect problems.


Labor

Labor is another lifecycle cost to be considered. Labor costs vary according to local labor rates and regulations, operation profile, plant availability requirements and required skill level. Whoever is in-charge of plant staffing should take these factors in consideration in preparing a manpower strategy. Experts suggest that the planning team should keep abreast of current local standards and practices to correctly forecast labor costs.


While some costs are inevitable over the course of a power generation system’s lifecycle, an efficient predictive and preventive maintenance program is key to reducing unnecessary costs. But lower costs is not the only benefit of properly planned and implemented maintenance programs: They can also reduce the risk of a major system failure while increasing system efficiency. As the experts say, the goal of a power plant operator is simple: Operate effectively for as long as possible while reducing costs and maximizing profit over the duration of the power generation system’s lifecycle.

How Caterpillar is Capturing the Imagination of its Customers

What do Snapchat and Caterpillar have in common? You could argue that both have unmistakably established their brand with that familiar yellow. However, one particular trait the social media phenomenon and the heavy equipment manufacturer share may not be as obvious: their unique uses of Augmented Reality to enhance and ultimately transform a user’s experience.

In simple terms, AR allows virtual objects to appear in front of you, as though they are in the real world. So, what’s the benefit for Caterpillar?

This technology is being deployed as a new way for operators to receive and communicate critical information and standardize complex processes through the use of sensory inputs such as sound, video and graphics.

While wearing a pair of AR glasses, job site information delivered becomes interactive and able to be digitally manipulated by an operator.
“Just think about sitting in your car, and no longer having a physical dashboard. Then, when you put on the AR glasses, all of that information – dashboard gauges, radio, switches, etc. – appears along with the ability to interact with it,” says Lonny Johnson, a senior engineer at Caterpillar.

By superimposing the right information in the right place at the right time, Caterpillar can simplify the overall electrical complexity of a machine’s cab. AR glasses also allow the operator to customize his or her machine interface.

For less experienced operators, a pictorial map can be especially helpful. “It allows operators to experiment with radically different interfaces, and receive guiding commands about those interfaces,” Johnson said.

By investing in this technology, Caterpillar is able to reduce costs, increase efficiency and enhance job site experiences.

“Caterpillar embraces parts, pieces, and products that are part of 21st-century life. In doing so, we are no longer confined to the area of the display,” Johnson said.

  • What is you overview of the current Genset market in the GCC?

The temporary power industry is largely dependent on the prevailing market situation and activities. In the context of the GCC, the rental power market is conditioned by several factors, including:

  • Utility shortages, particularly in KSA and Kuwait, especially during peak summer months 
  • The gradual recovery of the construction industry in UAE and Saudi Arabia

We are noticing the gradual expansion of the natural gas and dual-fuel genset markets, particularly where inexpensive natural gas is available. The growth of such markets are supported by the increase in unconventional gas resources and by stringent emission regulations in effect in many countries around the world.

Fuel availability and the costs of installing safe and reliable fuel delivery infrastructure have traditionally posed limitations on the growth of the natural gas generator market. Today, gas is becoming increasingly available and gas generation technology progressively finds application in bigger and longer-duration projects. The availability of dual-fuel generators (which significantly simplifies the transition from diesel-run to gas-run generators), is helping overcome these installation and operational obstacles.



  • How is your company geared up to meet the new demand trends?

The temporary power services that we offer vary from industry to industry and site to site.
In recognition of the changes in the market’s demands, we will continue to offer the most fuel efficient, reliable and technologically advanced generators and power systems to our clients to reduce their overall operating costs. We will combine it with consistent technical support and expert advice on equipment selection.  

The diesel generator market will continue to grow in the next several years, so we will continue to have diesel generators readily available in our fleet. As natural gas becomes increasingly available, and gas power generation technologies progressively find application in bigger and longer-duration projects, we will ensure to offer natural gas generators where it is appropriate.


  • What is the region’s uptake on smart technologies? What solutions does your company offer to that end? What are some of the latest innovations in Gensets to enhance user experience?

There is an intense interest in the GCC in technologies that aid in the provision of reliable and efficient electrical power, resource conservation and environmental stewardship. The relevance of such technologies cannot be overstated in the GCC’s modern environment, which sees high levels of power consumption that takes a toll on the generation, transmission and distribution facilities.

In this light, here are some of the smart technologies available in our power generations systems:

  • Our generators are equipped with state-of-the-art control and protection systems that allow them to change operational modes (island, grid or standby) in just a push of a button. Because of this, our generators can provide the precise electrical power at the exact time it is needed, in whatever mode required. 
  • Our generators are also equipped with local control systems that provide power metering, protective relaying, and engine and generator control and monitoring. They are integrated with digital voltage regulators, which works to enhance system monitoring. They offer the ability to view and reset diagnostics of all networked controls, eliminating the need for separate service tools for troubleshooting. They also have real-time clocks which allow for date and time-stamping of diagnostic and events.
  • To enhance user experience, our generators are equipped with engine operator interface featuring graphical display with positive image, transflective LCD and adjustable white backlight/contrast. Additional features include engine cool-down times, engine cycle crank, three engine control keys and status indicator (run/auto/stop), lamp test and alarm acknowledgement keys. It has warnings/shutdowns with indicating text for low oil pressure, high oil temperature, emergency stop, over speed and over crank, on top of an emergency stop push button and shortcut keys for engine and generator parameters. 



  • What are the latest innovations on Bi-fuel portable generators? 

Our dual-fuel power generators are specifically developed to reduce fuel costs and decrease emissions. They are equipped with a dynamic gas-blending technology that optimizes output, while being environmentally considerate. Our bi-fuel generators automatically adjust to changes in fuel quality and pressure to allow engines to run on a wide variety of fuels, including associated gas and vaporized LNG, with no loss of performance integrity. Owing to this, no customer input or gas analysis is required during operation, and no re-calibration is needed when the equipment is moved or the gas supply changes.



  • How will the shift towards renewable energy impact the Gensets market in the GCC?

Owing to the rapid depletion of the world’s fossil fuel resources, in addition to greater requirements in carbon reporting, many countries around the world are looking to diversify their energy mix to encourage long-term energy security. A crucial component of this initiative are renewable energy sources.

While renewable energy technologies are being optimized, continued dependence on traditional sources of electrical power is needed to bridge the power gap and maintain a continuous and reliable supply of electricity. Temporary power solutions, for instance, can work in tandem with renewable energy sources to help mitigate the issues of unpredictability and intermittency.

  • What are the major challenges in the GCC Gensets industry? How is the slump in oil prices impacting the market?

While the fact that the prevailing oil price makes generators cheaper to run is an advantage in theory, we have to remember that the requirement for generators is proportional to the rate of economic activity. At present, the prices of oil and commodities are suppressed, and this is having a negative impact on the interest on power generation services. We, however, expect the industry to rebound quickly as and when economic conditions improve.



  • How is the 5% VAT proposed by GCC countries likely affect the Gensets market?

The introduction of VAT in the region was largely prompted by the drop in revenues in the face of plummeting oil prices. With VAT, businesses and industrial companies must grapple with increased production and higher capital costs. Economists, however, predict that the benefits of VAT to the region will outweigh the financial burdens that come with it.

One positive scenario we see is that with the introduction of VAT, governments in the GCC can have additional revenues that they can use to build additional infrastructure, refurbish existing facilities, and overall improve services to their citizens. These represent excellent business opportunities for temporary power providers. As we have mentioned above, the temporary power industry is conditioned by the prevailing market situation and activities, and if GCC countries intensify their economic and social activities, the industry will continue to thrive in the region.



  • With competition in the market growing, what will industry players need to do to retain their clients and also win over new ones? What steps are you taking towards driving efficiency? How is this likely to give you a competitive edge? What is your company doing to have a competitive edge?

Altaaqa Global and Caterpillar Team Up to Power Cameroon and Empower Locals through Customer Development Program

The program through Caterpillar University helps solve Cameroon’s energy challenge while facilitating the transfer of engineering and advanced technical knowledge to local professionals at state-of-the-art 50 MW project

DUBAI – Altaaqa Global Caterpillar Rental Power, a leading global temporary power solutions provider, and Caterpillar Inc. have developed a solution to one of Cameroon’s biggest challenges: reliable energy access. This solution is not only about transferring power but also knowledge and prosperity across the African country.

In 2015, Altaaqa Global installed a 50 MW natural gas power plant in Cameroon’s most populous city, Douala, as an immediate solution to the city’s chronic electricity shortage. The power plant added reliable power to Cameroon’s grid, and provided its people and industries with a new, reliable source of electricity.

Just as important as the power was ensuring a local team of highly trained professionals was able to oversee the operation of the power plant. Altaaqa deployed Caterpillar University, Caterpillar’s proprietary training platform, to launch a Customer Development Program. The pilot program, which will continuously run for one year, is offered to a team of select local engineers and technical professionals from Altaaqa Global’s client Eneo, Cameroon’s integrated utility provider.


The Customer Development Program

One of the key pillars of Altaaqa Global's sustainable business model is extending employment and learning opportunities to local communities where it has projects, with the aim of enhancing their skills and transferring world-class industry knowledge to the local workforce.
To facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skills to Eneo’s team of local engineers and professionals, Altaaqa Global launched a tailored customer training program, in cooperation with Caterpillar University.

The program features three methods of instruction: classroom teaching, online instruction and on-the-job mentoring with Altaaqa Global’s Cat-certified in-house technicians. To encourage a better understanding of technical concepts taken up in the classroom, Altaaqa Global enrolled the Eneo engineers in Caterpillar University, which features expert-curated modules on service, safety and equipment operation.

For the purposes of the program, Altaaqa Global’s training engineers designed a learning plan that included carefully selected modules available on Caterpillar University. Considering their relevance to the participants’ tasks at site and to the engines installed for the project, the trainers hand-picked specialized courses on Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) and Engineering Service.

At the end of the year-long program, subject to the completion of all necessary on-line modules and a satisfactory performance in the final evaluation, the participants will be awarded a Level 1 Preventive Maintenance (PM) Technician certificate, and will thus be eligible to progress to second-level training. Altaaqa Global will conduct the program on a continuous basis, such that the training will be offered to every new team of engineers and technical professionals from Eneo.

Brownouts, Blackouts, Power Surges: What’s the Difference?

We offer hear the words blackout, brownout or power surge when the topic revolves around problems in electricity supply. For some, knowing the exact meaning of the terms is not at all important, because for them, the words only mean one thing: inconvenience. But, it is essential for everyone to have an idea of what they are, so that we know the root cause of the problem and how we can keep ourselves prepared for and safe from their consequences.

Here is an overview of what these terms actually mean…


BROWNOUT
A brownout is a drop in the power supply that leads to a dip in voltage. When a brownout happens, one may notice that lights become dim. Though brownouts are not total power failures, they may damage electrical equipment. Especially vulnerable during brownouts are induction and three-phase electrical motors, because they can overheat. A solution to frequent brownouts is to have a back-up power system that will provide the necessary power in case the voltage drops.


BLACKOUT
A blackout is way more serious than a brownout: It refers to a complete loss of power within a certain geographic area. Blackouts may be caused by several factors, and may take time to resolve, depending on the structure of the affected power network.


POWER SURGE
Power surges are known to be the most detrimental power disturbance, which can permanently damage many types of electric appliances. They occur when something increases the electrical charge at a certain point in the power lines. This sudden “jump” causes a spike in the electrical potential energy, which can increase the current flowing to the wall outlet. Fortunately, surge protectors and circuit breakers can protect you from power surges’ harmful effects. Surge protection should ideally be incorporated into the main power switchboard.


ELECTRICAL TREEING
Electrical treeing is a phenomenon that often manifests in high power installations, including HV power cables and transformers, among others. It is a damaging process owing to partial discharges, which progresses through the stressed dielectric insulation, in a path that looks like branches of a tree. If treeing is not checked, it can cause the continuous deterioration of the equipment, and can eventually result in a total breakdown. To avoid the harmful effects of treeing, it is important to use high-quality materials tailored for the electric load. Regular maintenance by trained engineers is also essential.

Drones to Replace Manual Work in Power Plant Inspections?

With their temperatures surging up to a thousand degrees Celsius, power plants need to be regularly and closely monitored for eventual wear and tear. US researchers claim drones can do it precisely, efficiently, quickly and safely...


Thoroughly inspecting power plants usually involve the dangerous tasks of climbing scaffolds and entering dark areas with temperatures-comparable-to-an-oven over at least a month. That practice may soon be a thing of the past.

Researchers at the University of Georgia in the USA have developed a sonar navigation system for drones that aims to improve the safety and efficiency of power plant inspections.

Looking to bats?

The objective of the team was to develop a navigation system that would eventually allow drones to replace manual work in power plant inspections. It, however, was not that easy.

The team had to face the challenge of developing a technology that could provide a reliable and precise signal despite the harsh environment of the generators. In the process of evolving the technology, the team found out that electromagnetic and material interference makes GPS and some navigation techniques difficult to use. The solution? The team looked to bats.

“It’s based on how bats navigate in a cave,” succinctly explained one of the researchers. The team developed a drone with a 360-degree rotatable scanner that sends ultrasound beams to the walls that could reflect pulse signals back to the sensor. This allows the team to accurately map the interiors of the steam rooms.

Replacing manual inspections with drones?

The team claims that with the use of the drone that they developed, inspections can be done within a day, instead of weeks or months. They added that since generators need not shut down during the “drone inspections”, the technology could increase power plant efficiency and save money.

Epilogue: Safety... everyone, everyday

Inspecting power plants, with the harsh environment inside the equipment and the dangerous procedures involved in the process, could pose serious risks to engineers and inspection professionals. In this light, all entities involved in the inspection of power stations should adopt an occupational health and safety (OH&S) policy to prevent injury and ill health to their workforce. All managers and supervisors should be responsible for ensuring that their staff are trained in approved work procedure and that they follow safe work methods and related regulations.

All stakeholders should be required to support the OH&S program of their companies, and health and safety should be a part of the daily routine of all staff members.

Julian Ford Joins Altaaqa Global as Chief Commercial Officer

With over 15 years of experience in the rental power industry, Ford takes the helm of the company’s strategic business development and top-line revenue generation functions

Altaaqa Global, a leading global provider of large-scale temporary power services, has appointed energy industry veteran, Julian Ford as Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), effective July 1, 2015. As the company’s CCO, Ford’s remit is to ensure that Altaaqa Global achieves revenue growth targets and overall commercial success, and to facilitate the formulation and implementation of innovative global commercial strategies.

Ford’s career in the industry started at the time when the concept of power plants on a rental basis was just gaining ground. He had a hand in introducing the concept of power project rental to governments of developing economies, which allowed them to hire power capacity to address short term energy issues during times of hydropower shortage or other generation or transmission issues.
Ford was instrumental in taking the rental power concept to different regions across the globe, including Middle East and Africa, South America, East Asia and South Asia. “My vision then,” he said, “was for the rental power market to develop beyond its traditional local markets and become a truly global business. We started in the Middle East and East Africa and quickly expanded our operations in other regions of the world.”

A true visionary, Ford led the way for the development of the gas-fueled temporary power equipment market in the mid-2000s. “At that time,” explained Ford, “diesel costs were rapidly rising, and it was imperative to diversify the product offering and capitalize on the growth of natural gas reserves.” With keen interest in markets where gas reserves were not vast enough to be commercially developed, Ford pioneered a new business model that allowed countries to monetize their ‘stranded gas’ reserves to generate useful low-cost electricity for the national grid.
